SADELER Justus

(Antwerp 1583 – Leiden or Venice 1620)

Justus was an engraver and dealer of prints belonging to the second generation of the Sadeler dynasty, a famous family of Flemish engravers and printers active throughout Europe for three generations.
He was the only son of Jan I Sadeler and he reached his father in Italy. Here he lived in Venice, where he probably helped his father in the management of the workshop and also accompanied him during his trip to Rome. After the death of Jan Sadeler, Justus remained in Venice where he continued, probably together with his uncle Raphael I, the paternal activity of engraver and editor. He performed reproductions of Dutch, Flemish and Italian artists. Among these last he derived subjects from Federico Zuccari, Antonio Tempesta, Odoardo Fialetti.
The date of his birth is not certain, as well as the place of his death.
He died in 1620: according to some historians in Venice, according to others in Leiden.
