COLLAERT Hans (or Jan) I

(Brussels 1530 ? – Antwerp 1580)

Hans was the son of Adriaen I, the founder of the Collaert dynasty, an important family of Flemish engravers and printers. He was the father of Adriaen II and Hans or Jan II, both active in Philipp Galle’s workshop in Antwerp.
He worked as a draftsman and engraver at his father’s studio, and after working for a few years with him, he moved to Rome to perfect his artistic apprenticeship.
Back to Antwerp, he continued his engraving activity with works of translation especially from Rubens, highly appreciated and sought after.
