Van HUCHTENBURG Jan

(Haarlem 1647 – Amsterdam 1733)

Dutch painter, draftsman and engraver of battles and landscapes in the second half of the 17th century, together with his brother Jacob. Initially, he was a pupil of the Dutch painter and engraver Thomas Wyck until he followed his brother Jacob to Rome for a period of stay and study. He later moved to Paris where he collaborated with Van Der Meulen at the Gobelin manufactory, making drawings for tapestries. After going back to Haarlem in 1670, he got married and opened an art workshop on his own. His paintings and his engravings were strongly influenced by the works of Philips Wouwerman and Adam Frans van der Meulen, both painters of war subjects.
He was noted by King William III and Prince Eugene of Savoy who entrusted him with the task of representing their battles. The pictorial dexterity, the technical skill and the deep spirit of observation of his paintings and engravings are superlatively revealed in the representations of battle scenes that have brought him the favors of the European courts.
